Nigüelas is located in the northern area of the Lecrín Valley, on the western slope of Sierra Nevada. The cultivation of orchards and fruit trees, along with water management, and the predominant presence of olive groves in the past, have left behind landscapes, buildings, and knowledge linked to agricultural work. The surroundings of Nigüelas hold a remarkable scenic value derived from its intensive irrigation agriculture, which characterizes the landscape with various shades of green provided by the vegetation of the crops and fruit orchards.

The irrigation agroecosystems of Nigüelas were established during the Middle Ages but have been modified with expansions and the inclusion of new hydraulic systems. Since the mid-20th century, there has been a gradual abandonment of agricultural activity, leading to the deterioration of these agroecosystems. Therefore, the project proposes to recover this type of historical irrigation and strengthen the connection with the local tradition.

The intervention site is characterized by its topography, clearly differentiating four terraces, as well as the presence of olive trees. A traditional irrigation system is proposed using acequias (irrigation channels) to feed the proposed orchards in different terraces, as well as cultivating aromatic plants on the highest terrace. This garden is complemented by rest areas under the existing and proposed olive trees, an event space, and an architectural structure designed to house a restaurant.

Nigüelas está situada en la zona norte del Valle de Lecrín, en la vertiente occidental de Sierra Nevada. El cultivo de huerta y frutales, junto con la gestión del agua, y la presencia predominante del olivar en el pasado, han dejado un legado de paisajes, construcciones y conocimientos vinculados al trabajo agrícola. El entorno de Nigüelas guarda un notable valor paisajístico derivado de su agricultura intensiva de regadío, que caracteriza el paisaje con diversas tonalidades de verde aportadas por la vegetación de los cultivos y huertos de frutales.

Los agroecosistemas de riego de Nigüelas se establecieron durante la Edad Media pero han sido modificados con la inclusión de nuevos sistemas hidráulicos. Desde mediados del siglo XX se ha producido un paulatino abandono de la actividad agrícola, provocando el deterioro de estos agroecosistemas. Por ello, el proyecto propone recuperar este tipo de riego histórico y fortalecer la conexión con la tradición local.

El lugar de la intervención se caracteriza por su topografía, diferenciando claramente cuatro terrazas, así como por la presencia de olivos milenarios. Se propone un sistema de riego tradicional mediante acequias (canales de riego) para alimentar los huertos propuestos en diferentes terrazas, así como cultivar plantas aromáticas en la terraza más alta. Este jardín se complementa con áreas de descanso bajo los olivos existentes y propuestos, un espacio para eventos y una estructura arquitectónica diseñada para albergar un restaurante.
